To date, over 45,000 Singaporeans have joined ACRES in supporting a global movement for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW)—a powerful call to recognise that animals matter.
Across the world today, animals face suffering on an unimaginable scale:
- Over 60 billion farm animals are raised annually for meat, milk, and eggs—most in intensive farming systems that deny even their most basic welfare needs.
- An estimated 600 million dogs and 600 million cats live globally, with 80% of them stray or unwanted, vulnerable to neglect and abuse.
- The illegal wildlife trade, valued at US$10 billion a year, continues to devastate ecosystems and causes immense suffering to millions of animals—ranking just behind arms and drug trafficking in black market value.
- In many developing nations, draught animals are the backbone of rural farming. Yet, with limited resources allocated for their care, these animals often endure exhausting conditions with little support.
- Natural disasters—from floods to wildfires—impact countless animals, yet they remain largely overlooked in emergency response efforts.
Why a Universal Declaration Matters
Led by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), this global campaign seeks to secure international recognition that:
- Animals are sentient beings—they can feel pain, fear, and joy
- Humans have a moral responsibility to prevent suffering
- Animal welfare must be a priority in policymaking and legislation worldwide
The goal: 10 million signatures—a clear, united message to world leaders that we are serious about making animal protection a global commitment. A Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, adopted by the United Nations, would create a strong foundation to improve the lives of billions of animals, now and into the future.
